University Park is a city in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. The population was 27,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community began as a post office called Pleasant Prairie in 1876 and became known as University Park after the first university to be founded in Texas, Washington and Lee University. In 1938, the town annexed parts of Arlington Heights and Richardsontown which together had a population of 14,000. The annexation caused a rift between University Park residents and their Arlington Heights neighbors because of their different social backgrounds. In 1958, University Park became an independent city with its own government. In 1984 it consolidated with Richardsontown to form the current City of University Park. According to the 2010 census, its total population was 27,890; 23% Hispanic or Latino (of any race), up from 17% in 2000; and 10% African American (of any race). The largest groups are White (27%), Black (3%), Asian/Pacific Islander (1%), Mexican Americans (2%) and Hispanics/Latino(s) (10%). Uptown shopping districts include Midway Mall and Dell Place Shopping Center which are both within walking distance of each other on State Highway 121 near downtown University Park. Midway Mall features Sears department stores as well as several US Cellular outlets while Dell Place Shopping Center has anchor tenants such as JCPenney and Macy's Department Store along with several small businesses including CVS Pharmacy and KFC restaurant

The city of Houston developed around University Park, and the two communities gradually merged in the 1960s. Today, University Park is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in Texas and has a rich history that can be found from its early days when it was home to farmers to its current role as a center for research and education.
University Park, Texas is a small town located in the county of Haskell in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. University Park was founded on November 12, 1874 by John Kirby and his wife Mary Ann Kirby as a Methodist church near what is now Interstate 10 exit 191. The Kribbs donated land for the school's first building, which became known as "The Farm". In 1907, Baylor University purchased land adjacent to University Park from the Kirby family. The university built its first buildings on this property in 1909-10 and named them "The Main Building" after then-Chancellor James M. Meredith. In 1924, when Baylor acquired another piece of land adjoining University Park, it renamed that parcel "The Woodlands". Between 1937 and 1941, during World War II, much of the town was destroyed by an air raid; however much survives including The Woodlands Museum which features exhibits on early farming techniques and American culture during World War II. On October 13th 1935 a tornado touched down near County Road 620 east of University Park just north of FM 1960 (the present day TX 290). This tornado produced very destructive damage with trees snapped off limbs high in the tree line and heavy destruction throughout downtown University Park with many homes damaged or destroyed completely including Oneonta Baptist Church which still stands today (it had been knocked down by a storm earlier that year). It killed one person & injured over 50 people before finally dissipating about 20 miles away due to strong winds & rain 2 days later
