In 1916 university officials merged with nearby Palestine to form the new City of Baylor University (later renamed Baylor University School of Medicine). At this time Baylor's main campus constructed across from Palestine housed 1,500 students and employees. During World War II enrollment at Baylor increased significantly due to wartime needs for shipbuilding materials that were shipped into Europe via Lake Charles Naval Shipyards on Lake Pontchartrain; after V-E Day (12/11/1945) American troops returned home and resumed their education within days of victory over Japan; enrollment continued through 1946 when Baylor closed its naval yards. After World War II many faculty positions were filled by civilians who had left academia or government service; consequently there remained little graduate student enrollment until 1950 when an agreement was made between BU School of Veterinary Medicine and Methodist Hospital to merge which created one large academic medical center with staffs exceeding 10,000 students (then largest concentration outside North America).
