University Park, Texas is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. University Park was founded in 1889 by Andrew Carnegie and is home to Baylor University, the largest private university in Texas. The first town in what is now University Park was called "Carnegie's Landing". Carnegie donated land for the new town and named it after him. The town grew quickly because of its location close to Baylor University and other important businesses. In 1903, University Park became a city under the name of "University Heights". In 1912, it changed its name back to "University Park" after being chosen as one of six cities in Dallas County to receive an annual grant from Carnegie totaling $100,000. In 1925, Baylor College opened its doors on campus in what is now known as Main Campus. As enrollment increased at Baylor and elsewhere within the newly formed city limits of University Park, City Hall was constructed on South Elm Street between West Market and Elm Streets serving as both municipal courthouse and library until 1945 when that building was destroyed by a fire which also destroyed many other buildings within downtown University Park during World War II; this event helped establish Baylor's role as one of the leading universities in Texas even before they had their own main campus outside of Houston (the present day Rice Univ.) In 1969–70 Mayor Jock Woodbine announced plans for construction of a new downtown business district around Main Campus that would include portions of South Elm Street between West Market and Elm Streets as well as parts of North Lamar Boulevard east thereof (then three blocks north-west of Main Campus). Work began on this project but never came to fruition due to budget problems; however street namesakes such as streetsigns still remain today near Main Campus despite no physical connection between those areas today
