Universal City was founded in 1912 by two entrepreneurs, movie producer Jesse L. Loring and hotelier John P. Bailey. The original Universal City Hotel was built on a bluff overlooking the current site of the city. In 1916, the company bought land from the Mexican government for $1 million and began to build its first studio, now known as Hollywood Studios. In 1928, Universal Pictures became a subsidiary of American Film Corporation (AFC). In 1933, with the onset of World War II, Universal Pictures produced four films that featured US troops in combat: Battle of Midway (1943), Casablanca (1942), Nowhere To Go but Up (1941) and A Lonely Place to Die (1939). With profits from these films going into American war efforts, Universal City became an official wartime zone. After the war ended in 1945, Universal City began to grow rapidly as a result of postwar demand for movies and other entertainment products. The company developed its own library of classic films and created new genres such as science fiction and horror. It also built multiplexes throughout the city which offered customers more than one film at a time viewable on large screens. In 1954, Loring retired from his ownership stake in the company and it was divided between his sons Jesse Jr., Dean Jaffe and Harry Cohn. Under their leadership, Universal City continued to grow rapidly with several new theaters being constructed including one in Dallas which opened in 1957 called EPCOT Landmark Park Stadium-Theatres Inc.—later renamed Disneyrequired guests to purchase tickets punched lottery numbers rather than receive them at check-in
