Universal City is a city in Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Antonio County and part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first European to visit Universal City was José de la Cruz y Salcedo on October 1, 1795 while exploring what is now Medina County. In 1836, J.D. Curry established a trading post in what is now Universal City proper; he named it "Curry's Trading Post". A post office called Utopia had been established at Universal City in 1893 but operations were discontinued due to lack of customers; the name was changed to Universal City on July 15th of that year after local residents successfully petitioned for the change citing their desire for an open town with no limits on commerce or development within its boundaries On December 12th 1908 construction began on a market hall/storefronts complex designed by engineer Alfred Burchfield which would serve as the nucleus around which subsequent commercial activity would develop On January 6th 1909 Charles Drake organized a group called "The Lone Stars" who purchased 2 acres (0.81 km²) north of Main Street near San Jacinto Creek for $5,000 east of Interstate 10; they renamed their new town "Universal City" after Drake's old stomping ground – Omaha Nebraska Territory where he had made his home before moving back eastward in 1855 A post office opened at UniversalCity on September 15th 1902 under the name Utopia with mail service beginning from May 16th 1903 . On March 24th 1906 General George Custer arrived at UniversalCity from Dodge Ballroom where he had been performing as an entertainment star; his arrival led to celebration throughout town including bands playing Johann Strauss Jr.'s waltz "Eveready" and McKinney's song "Mexican Hat Dance". After spending two weeks performing here he continued southbound on I-10 through Dallas Missouri en route back home via Houston Texas before finally returning home via Buffalo Bill Cody’s ranch north of Fort Worth Texas . In 1911, World War I broke out and Austin became one of the largest wartime cities in America with more than 100,000 residents living in tents or cars on Main Street between Fifth Street and Lamar Boulevard. However, despite some challenges such as increased taxes during World War II due to war-related production shortages, Austin continued to grow steadily during peacetime until 1970 when oil prices collapsed and the city faced significant budget cuts which led to its decline over ensuing years. However, following two stints as Mayor Of Dallas (2005-2007) and then again from 2013-2015 by mayor Greg Stanton after being elected lieutenant governor under Abbott),Universal City has seen renewed hope for revitalization with plans announced by Stanton that include creating jobs within town limits through various initiatives including: development grants for small businesses; additional funding for infrastructure needs; support for arts programming; annexation into neighboring municipalities should they desire it; establishment of partnerships with local Colleges/Universities allowing students who live within town limits accessto quality education outside their home communities;Creation Of A Community Development Trust Fund To Serve All And Encourage Economic Innovation Within The Town Limits
Universal City was founded on April 4, 1892 by a group of businessmen led by George Street. The area that is now Universal City had been part of the Mexican town of Zacatecas for years and the entrepreneurs wanted to create a new city that would be accessible to everyone. They started with a small plot of land near the present-day Hollywood Studios in Los Angeles and built their first buildings there. In 1912, they moved to what is now Midway Medical Center and began developing other areas including El Monte, which became known as "The City." In 1923, they opened their own movie theater called the Regal. The city grew rapidly during World War II because war production increased demand for goods made in California. After the war, UniversalCity became more diversified and developed into an upscale residential community with high-rise buildings and shopping malls. In 1984, Universal City passed from its original owners to Comcast Corporation who turned it into one of its largest properties. Comcast used it as an opportunity to redevelop some properties such as Midway Medical Center into modern complexes that are still home to many residents today. In December 2007, Comcast announced plans to sell all but two of its corporate campuses in order to focus on online services instead. This left UniversalCity with just two commercial buildings - One at Warner Bros.'s Burbank studios and one at Time Warner's Leavesden studio - remaining significant remnants of its once vibrant industrial core.
