The area now known as Universal City was part of the Hudspeth Purchase land grant to Antonio López de Santa Anna on February 14, 1836. On November 16, 1846, General Sam Houston granted US$10,000 to J.B. Hogg for the purchase of 1/5th of an acre (0.2 km²) for use as a courthouse site and jail in what would later become Universal City proper; it became San Jacinto County on November 17, 1846. In 1865 it annexed parts of Hudspeth and Willacy Counties - making it one of the original Uptowns in Dallas metropolitan area In 1886 – when Dallas began its growth as a commercial center – local business leaders donated land east of Trinity Street for a new civic center that would house county government and other vital functions such as firefighting and public education; on May 4, 1888 Universal City incorporation took place with Judge John Biddle presiding over its first meeting On July 3rd 1890 George Pemberton dedicated what is today downtown's Main Plaza to honor "the pioneers who founded this city" with an event attended by then Mayor James Murchison and other dignitaries In 1893 construction began on The Lone Star Saloon at Fourth & Elm Streets which served as the town's first post office until 1907 By 1910 Universal City had more than 2200 residents and 100 businesses including banks- twenty-four funeral homes- ten grocery stores- six clothiers- two printing presses- four hotels/motels and several frame houses Two years later another boom period started when oil was found in Eagle Ford Shale areas west of town limits In 1916 Standard Oil Company bought majority interest from A&P Company after becoming involved in gas drilling near town limits However before long operations were curtailed due to lack of resources As oil prices plummeted during World War I production resumed but again proved unsuccessful due to competition from American Flyer Line Incorporated By 1923 luster had worn off rapid population growth caused by railroad connections within city limits which led to integration into Dallas Metropolitan Statistical Area

However, during World War II,Universal City fell victim to rationing and shortages of goods that kept many people out of work. As a result of these problems, universal city experienced a decline in population over the next several decades. However, thanks to new development within the city limits and recent investments from local businesses and individuals alike (most notably Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund), universal city has begun to experience an upswing in recent years. In 2017 alone, Universal City saw significant growth in its economy with expansions at both its downtown business district and its arts & culture sector; this growth has helped drive additional job creation within the community as well as contribute significantly tax revenue back into town coffers."
