The founding of Universal City was a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War (1846-48). A group of nine men met at San Antonio on October 6th and voted to form Universal City as its own county with its own government and courthouse. On December 3rd 1851, General Sam Houston signed an act creating Universal City as a town with seven buildings: one store, one hotel, two churches, and thirty acres (twenty three hectares) of land for farming. The first post office in Universal City opened on January 14th 1852. In 1857, John Fenton built a cotton gin in Universal City which became famous for its quality cotton thread until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1865-66 Austin entrepreneur John Goode began making his home here after moving from Galveston Island where he had started an unsuccessful dry goods business Fulton & Goode warehouses that could hold up to 100 tons each

By 1907, Universal City had a population of over 100,000 people and was home to a major movie theater, the Dalyan Theatre. In 1912, the city annexed parts of west Austin and formed the new municipality of Austin. In 1915, Universal City became part of the newly created State of Texas when it was merged with seven other municipalities into the new state. In 1919, RKO Pictures began production at their studios on Royal Road inUniversal City. This led to increased film production throughout South Texas and helped spur development around town including businesses like M&M's Creamery and Waffle House which still stand today. In 1933, Warner Brothers started production at their studio on Vine Street in Universal City for their feature film "The Wizard of Oz". This helped lead to further growth around town as businesses such as KFC erected tents outside their restaurant to provide catering for these screenings. During World War II, UniversalCity experienced an increase in business as war-related movies were produced here such as "A Strategy with You" (1943) and "One Hundred Years from Now" (1945). After the war ended,UniversalCity saw a decline due to dwindling movie production demand but has seen recent resurgence with several high-profile productions being filmed here such as "Jurassic World" (2015) and "Black Panther" (2018).
