Gun targets have been a part of Universal City, Texas for over 100 years. The targets are often found in the open air and can be found at various locations around town. Some of the earliest guns that were used to shoot at targets in Universal City were rifles and pistols. The first target range was opened up by Captain John S. Smith in 1869. Captain Smith had a private gun range located on Commerce Street which became known as "Smith's." The first public target range was opened up by Judge James Crouch in 1875. There were three ranges within Universal City before the current location was chosen for the first rifle club shooting contest held in 1901. "Rifle Club Shooting Contest" - (First) In 1901, the "Rifle Club Shooting Contest" was held at the present location and it soon became one of the most popular events on Earth! This annual event pitted shooters from all over against each other in a challenge to see who could hit their opponents' targets from a distance of 50 yards or more! After many years of fun and competition, this event has finally come to an end!

Universal City is a small city in the Texas Hill Country, about 35 miles (56 km) east of Austin. The population was 16,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The cotton and cattle boomtown began to form in 1876 when Universal City landowner James Hogg sold 144 acres (57 ha) of his ranch for $2,000. By 1880, Universal City had developed into a vibrant center for commerce with goods from as far away as California and Mexico. In 1887, Hogg donated 4 square miles (10 km²) of land to the city for use as parkland; this became known as "Hogg Park". In 1912, Universal City became an independent municipality with its own government and elected officials. In 1933, during World War II, Universal City joined other American cities in support of the United States war effort by creating the largest military housing project in history - The National Military Housing Corp., which built barracks for 30000 men and women at three sites: Clinton Heights (now downtown), Westwood Village on Interstate 35E near UT Austin's campus, and North Olmos Creek near San Antonio Airport. A new freeway was constructed through town in the early 1960s which severed most commercial ties to nearby Round Rock; however, despite these challenges universal city has remained largely intact since that time including its rich cultural heritage dating back to its original incorporation as a town in 1887
