The area now known as Universal City was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first white person to live in what is now Universal City was Ishmael Smith, who came to the area in 1827. In 1845, Universal City became part of the Mexican Republic. On November 6, 1850, United States citizens James Wickersham and Samuel French built a store on Temple Street in downtownUniversalcity. On January 1, 1861, Texas statehood was achieved and Universal City became part of Texas. The city continued to grow rapidly during this time with new businesses being founded such as The Humble Store and The Bazar Bar & Grill. In 1912, the old San Antonio Terminal Railroad depot on Main Street was replaced by a larger building which served as headquarters for several local business organizations including the Chamber of Commerce andthe waterworks company

Universal City is a census-designated place in San Antonio, Texas, United States. The population was 576 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–San Marcos–Mission Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Universal City post office opened in 1872, and became an important transportation center for goods coming from the eastern side of San Antonio to Mission Reach on the west side of town. In 1907, Universal City annexed parts of neighboring Villanueva and Hidalgo Counties. In 1912, Harry Fenton developed "Fenton's Mills", which became one of the largest cotton mills in North America. The mill continued until it closed in 1984 due to competition from more modern mills. It was also here that Tom Mix founded Mix Productions Inc., now a major music production company based out of Hollywood California. With its large cotton fields and riverfront location, Universal City was an ideal spot for manufacturing and processing products during World War II as well as later years when oil discoveries made this area a boomtown with many new businesses popping up. During prohibition years (1920-1928), Universal City saw some high-profile arrests including that of Al Capone and other racketseer captains like Bugsy Siegel who operated out of their offices along Main Street south from the post office building until they were raided by US Customs agents under orders from President Coolidge on July 1st 1928 (thus marking Prohibition's end). In 1954, Universal Pictures Corporation moved its headquarters from Culver City to downtown Los Angeles after buying Ealing Studios’s site across Seventh Street from Paramount Pictures main studio lot; thus becoming one giant movie studio with two buildings measuring over . The old Culverville Post Office building served as headquarters for many years before being torn down in 2006 to make way for Tower Records store located next door on Commerce Street - one block east of I-10/I-35W exit 190A off Loop 375A / Loop 410A at Interstate 10 & Elmhurst Avenue / University Drive South / Waugh Road West (Southwest corner) just inside Uptown district boundaries between Third Ward on the north side & Fourth Ward on the south side; see photo below: At right are original entrance columns still extant - these can be seen near intersection with current First Floor window line above: Original glass front doors now open inwardly - facade has been remodeled once again since move! After several failed attempts by developer John Atherton to build a large skyscraper adjacent to original Post Office property across Commerce Street – culminating in his purchase/ demolition/rebuilding project which included removal/replacementof entire roofline/ monumental entablature (& much else within city walls!), finally starting construction about 2003 following various inputs & public meetings + numerous permits issuance throughout early 2002 – tower finally topped off about 2005 – well over 2 decades after initial planning & construction began! As noted earlier, following recent zoning changes which went into effect effective January 1st 2011 (i.e., increased pedestrian activity Downtown), business owners have agreed to install re-sealed streetlights at all entrances TO THE TOWER beginning approximately late summer or early fall 2011 so as not “to attract attention away from [Downtown] areas where there have been recent problems with vandalism etc., etc."see photo below: Just northwest corner Of First Floor Lobby Window Line From Wall To Roof Line Above On East Side Of New Building Just Inside Uptown District Boundaries

The tower played an important rolein helping drive economic development withinUniversalCity during subsequent decades; it served as bothan iconic symbol for the city and an essential componentof its prosperanceto date. Today, UniversalCity is one of Austin's most vibrant neighborhoods with diverse cultural experiences at various levelsof activity from restaurants to theaters to museums .
