Universal City, Texas is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,598 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in San Antonio County after Austin and it is located on the bank of the Medina River. The name "Universal City" comes from Spanish for "one town", because there were two villages here before annexation by San Antonio in 1836. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1836 when Captain John B. Lewis sent out a party to explore what became present-day San Antonio County. He found an area that would be ideal for settlement since it had access to both navigable rivers and was close to Mexican territory where he could trade goods with their Indian allies. The site chosen for Universal City was near what is now DowntownSanAntonio, on land that had been part of the mission district of Alamo Heights (now eastbound I-35 and westbound FM 1172). In 1840, General Sam Houston purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) north of Universal City from José de la Garza y Costilla for $5 per acre ($140 per hectare). This land would later become known as Rice Field Airport and still forms a large part of Universal City today. In 1845, Houston built the first courthouse in San Antonio and named it after himself – Houston Hall (still standing today). Houston's vision for UniversalCity included developing it into a thriving agricultural center with markets throughout the city; creating schools and hospitals; providing transportation options including trains to missions outside of San Antonio; and hosting conventions and other events downtown which would generate wealth for the city fathers. During its early years, UniversalCity faced many challenges but did not give up easily. In 1850, Mayor Manuel Pérez erected an imposing brick wall around town to keep Indians from raiding crops or stealing property inside city limits so that businesses could remain open without fear of retaliation from Native Americans who lived within easy reach. Despite this security measure, several incidents occurred during this time period that led some local citizens to dub UConnco "the Wild West".
