Universal City, Texas is a city in southern U.S. county of Webb County, Texas, on the US-Mexico border. The population was 17,830 as of the 2010 census[1] and is included within the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and shares boundaries with Lubbock to the north and Amarillo to the east. The name "Universal City" comes from two contradictory references: one source claims that it was named for Saint George (Ulysses S. Grant), while another suggests that it was founded by José de la Cueva y Costilla who arrived in 1821 as captain general of Mexico's army seeking passage to America via Chihuahua[2]. The first reference specifically mentions "the town at San Antonio", but no proof exists to support either claim.[3] In 1845, Universal City became an independent municipality under Mexican rule until its annexation by Texas in 1907. In 1912, Universal City submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) for an experimental airfield which would later become Travis Air Force Base; however, no action was taken because there were already plans for what would become Austin-Round Rock Airport.[4] An ordinance creating Universal City came into effect on July 1, 1914 when Territorial Governor John Hance designated all of Webb County as part of new Austin County; this followed a referendum conducted in March 1914 which had approved annexation of Tyler and other nearby counties by Austin County[5][6]. On November 5th 1916 voters issued a proposition providing for creation of Universal City together with neighboring Lubbock as Kingsbury Independent School District #1 after voting on whether or not to annex neighbouring Hudspeth and Williamson Counties along with Frio Valley and missions such as San Fernando Rey del Rio[7][8]. The school district formed on January 1st 1918 following approval from the State Board of Education; it initially served primarily students in Central Valley towns including Victorville before expanding outwards over time into present-day Midland,[9][10] San Marcos,[11], Harlingen,[12], and Comanche Pecos communities near Eagle Pass;[13] ultimately serving all 7 counties located withinAustin County excluding Tyler Village which became Arlington Heights according to current boundaries set forth in resolution passed by the Board on August 29th 2020 [14][15]). On October 15th 1924 local radio station KVUE received authorization from then-President Coolidge through Presidential Executive Order No. 2331 for construction of transmitter facilities west side/northwest corner of UTAS – later known as KLUV – making Universal City one step closer towards becoming an open regional television market place.[16][17]; however due to financial difficulties KLUV failed to gain FCC license #829 & ceased operations effective December 14th 1925 resulting in resultant loss of $50K per year revenue during their final 3 years operational shortcoming:[18],[19],[20]; this event led directly to eventual establishment & development adjacent UTSA Campus now home to Brown University (& adjacent south campus former Trinity University Hospital)[21][22]). On September 12th 1951 local radio station KLRJ began broadcasting West Coast Mainstream Radio programming from their current site just northwest off I-10 across from Central American restaurantborder crossing now occupied by IHOP Restaurant - continuing prohibitionist values espoused during early days FM media ownership era[/23]. Universal City is a city located in San Antonio, Texas. It was founded on May 15, 1911 by five businessmen: Cecil B. DeMille, W. H. Marsden, Jesse James, Harry Laughlin and the brothers Sam and Frank Jepsen. The first hotel in Universal City was the Hotel Vista on Monday Night Street. On December 5, 1912, the first movie theater in Universal City opened with a showing of The Adventures of Robin Hood. The name of the theater was changed to the Regal Cinema in 1915 because it could not compete with Cinemas de Mexico which had been built just across town by Mexican immigrants working for American companies like adobe and oil interests. In 1916 Universal City became an incorporated municipality under the Name of San Antonio Municipal Corporation
