Universal City, Texas is a small city located in Kendall County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Universal City School District #2 and the name of their middle school mascot. The first post office in Universal City was established on July 1, 1854. The town line was drawn at Lone Star Road and Interstate 35 from what is now Garland County to include all of Kendall County. On November 3, 1860, a fire destroyed much of downtown and killed around 100 people including one-time Mayor John Haggerty. In a resolution dated December 14th 1861, the General Assembly appointed James Swayne as temporary location commissioner for "the repair and rebuilding of said [downtown] portion." The town line was redrawn again on March 7th 1865 when Baylor University moved to its current site south of I-35 west of Garland. The old townsite became part of Baylor University's new campus while the old standalone buildings in downtown Universal City were used as classrooms and adminstrative offices until they were torn down in 1963 to make way for Baylor's newcampus facing I-635 eastward across from Interstate 35E/I-40W which opened in 1965. On October 15th 1870 Universal City residents voted to annex Castro Valley eastward into their town limits along with Springdale to form an even larger community known as Castro Valley Annexation No. 2 (now Springdale). This annexation created what is now Independence Park within Union Pacific Railroad land grant which had been given by President Ulysses S Grant to the Mexican government following their victory over American troops during the Mexican–American War on April 20th 1867 after winning many battles near San Antonio de Bexar Countyline. After becoming defunct on January 1st 1902 due to merging with other municipalities within Kendall County - chiefly Springdale - Castro Valley Annexation #1 reappeared on city maps under that name until it too disappeared entirely from municipal records on February 24th 1962 when Houston annexed nearby Clear Lake Village as well as most of Clear Lake Township forming Houston Heights neighborhoods effective date being February 26 th . Houston Heights annexed some neighboring communities also effective date being Feb 26th 1960: Clear Lake Village (renamed Houston Gardens), Buffalo Bayou North Side (renamed MidtownHouston), Mount Pleasant (renamed Montrose) and Newmark Landing adjacent Sugar Land Naval Shipyard ending what had beenClear Lake VillageTYPE annexation before it too vanished completely from municipal records
The first Universal City was a small Texan town of around 7,000 people that was founded in 1855. It was located on the banks of the Trinity River and became known for its entertainment industry, such as theaters, speakeasies and dance halls. In 1915, Universal Pictures Corporation was formed in response to the success of Biograph Studios in Hollywood, California. The company produced films including "The Jazz Singer" (1927), "The Mummy" (1932) and "Fantomasia" (1935). In 1934, Universal merged with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to form MGM. The merged companies made various productions including "A Tale of Two Cities" (1936), "Hollywood Hard Luck" (1939) and "I Spy" (1941). In 1951, MGM merged with United Artists studios to create Columbia Pictures. This led to many successful box office projects such as "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Patton", "Civil War II" and "Doctor Zhivago". After World War II ended in 1945,Universal City experienced a rapid growth in population due to new housing developments called 'the Montero Plan'. The city's boundaries grew by 120 miles over the next decade until they reached southern San Antonio County.
