Universal City is a city located in San Antonio, Texas, United States. It was established on November 12, 1853 by four men who pooled their money to start the town. The original site of Universal City included land that now includes much of downtown San Antonio. The name comes from the Latin word universum (wide), meaning "the whole world." The first post office in Universal City was opened on September 15, 1854. In 1865, the first train stop in Universal City opened. In 1915, the first movie theater in Universal City opened. On October 25, 1925, the name of UniversalCity became an incorporated city with a population of 30,000 people. The current mayor is Ron Nirenberg and the city council is made up of 11 members. In 1969-1970, UniversalCity along with Fort Worth sat at odds over plans for Interstate 27 which would have run through downtown San Antonio and destroyed much of the historic district within walking distance of both cities' center. A key factor in this conflict was how much money each city wanted to raise for its own infrastructure projects -UniversalCity wanted more than Fort Worth did and eventually got its way; however Fort Worth has never relinquished its claim to universalcity as part of their official history or local branding

Universal City, Texas is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–Bexar Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Universal City" was chosen by General Sam Houston and it refers to the idea of one community that would be home to all races and religions. The first Europeans to visit Universal City were Friars Francisco de la Garza and José de Zúñiga on October 20, 1718. The two men saw a Spanish fortifications on one of the hills overlooking downtown and decided to stay for lunch. They campinged out near El Presidio during the night of October 21-22. The first Mormon Battalion (Mormon pioneers) left Nauvoo, Illinois on April 6, 1847 and arrived at San Antonio on May 5th. On July 8th they established a camp on what is now State Highway 100 west of downtown. The town began as Mission Santa Anna with six families from La Feria under Brother George Smith who had been given land east of Mission Concepcion by Governor Pámán in 1836 for ranching purposes only. He named it after Santa Anna Creek which flowed through his property between missions Concepcion and Santiago de Compostela (now part of University Park). On November 15, 1850 General James Kenedy relieved Colonel Arthur Pryor as commander of Presidio Forces stationed at San Antonio Bayou opposite Universal City when Pryor became ill with tuberculosis; he had also served as Military Governor of Texas since March 1st, 1849 replacing Colonel James Bowie who died in office January 1st that year due to yellow fever contracted while governor’s yacht docked at Galveston Island; Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Brockman took command until December 4th when Pryor returned from Havana Cuba where he had been military governor since February 12th following Mexican War victory over American forces under General Zachary Taylor; during his absence Vice Admiral David Denton assumed command effective December 4th although no record exists as to why Denton did not continue command or return home after illness recurred three days later on December 10th A new courthouse was built in 1854 by John Waddell which replaced an earlier structure destroyed in an earthquake just south of town centre in 1851; this building still stands today along Main Street across from St John’s Episcopal Church dating back to 1865 In 1860 four blocks northwest corner Royal Road & Victoria Avenue was constructed by local citizens for school use only becoming known as “ UNIVERSAL CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT RD #2” At this time there were eighty students enrolled plus ten teachers occupying classrooms inside what is now Driscoll Arena complex paralleling Broadway then leading into Universal Studios across Railroad Avenue currently used by CVS Pharmacy . On March 30th 1861 orders were received from President Abraham Lincoln authorizing Major Generals James Foard [(at Fort Worth] & Don Carlos Buell [(at Austin)] respectively take possession & establish military government over all Texan territory including our present city limits [This order specifically ordered] This event occurred at about 11 PM Saturday night march 30 1861 while Union soldiers were quartered outside our doors serving their term’s[i.] You are therefore informed that we have passed away without leaving any remains behind having accomplished everything set before usHOLLYWOOD NATIONAL PARK district ranger
Universal City was founded in 1912 by a group of businessmen led by Carl Junkin. The city was originally called "Junkinville" after junk dealers who had to leave for Prohibition. In 1922, the city annexed parts of Calliope and San Antonio. In 1934, Universal City became the first municipality in Texas to be granted municipal government status. As the state's capital, it saw growth in its businesses and population as well as its own government. In 1949, Universal City became an independent city and retains that status today.
