In February 1850, construction began on what would become downtown Tyler when local merchants donated land for a public square known as Market Square; this area now forms much of downtown’s core including Eastern Market which opened its doors to pedestrians in 1855 On October 15th 1860 while still under Confederate rule (the day before American Civil War began), Union troops attacked Post Oak Hill and burned down many buildings within what is now downtown Tyler Later that same year Union forces again attacked Post Oak Hill but were repelled by Confederate forces commanded by General Pemberton In 1865 both Confederate general Braxton Bragg and Union general Edwin Moultrie surrendered their armies at Appomattox Court House east of Richmond Virginia following the surrendering army's northern march thru Maryland
