The first European to visit what is now Tyler was José de la Garza on October 15, 1819 while traveling through present-day Kaufman County on his way from San Antonio to Nacogdoches. Regardless, upon learning about Houston's namesake's birthday – October 2nd – locals in 1836 decided to change theirTownship's name to honor their hero! In 1868, following annexation by Austin County, growth in Tyler accelerated due largely to cattle drives brought into central Texas byrailroads looking for new markets for their products. By 1881 nearly all residents had moved away; however business continued with small outposts such as Buffalo Bayou Rancho Seco until 1901 when oil production peaked and began driving prices down which led directly towardsTyler becoming one of America’s largest petrochemical cities!
