Tyler, Texas is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,874 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. Tyler was founded on May 25, 1836 by Captain Levi Hargrave and his men as the territorial capital of what would become Johnson County. The first white settlers arrived in Tyler in 1837. The first store opened in 1839 and the first post office was established in 1840. In 1845, Tyler became the county seat after being chosen by commissioners from out of a field that included several other towns within Johnson County. During the Mexican-American War (1846-48), skirmishes were fought near Tyler between American army troops and Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. On July 9, 1846, Confederate forces under General Sam Houston attacked an American military detachment near what would later be known as Monterey Mills; one civilian died and three Americans were wounded before Mexican reinforcements arrived to drive off the rebels. After Mexico's independence from Spain was recognized by America on February 10, 1850, Texas declared war on Mexico; however much fighting took place until January 6 of that year before hostilities ended with no significant gain for either side. In 1870–71 major ranching operations began to move into central Texas following new land grants from Congress which made possible vast acreage for ranching without paying taxes or livestock premiums required of other farmers in states such as California or New York City. By 1886 there were over 100 businesses operating in Tyler with a population of 15200 residents including 5000 tenant farmers who received free ranches upon landing onshore after rafting across Lake Travis from San Antonio Bayou Texoma down to present day Tyler). Unfortunately during this time period railroad construction through central TX caused great destruction throughout these rural areas resulting not only in loss of homes and businesses but also loss of life due to falling objects and fires which often destroyed entire villages complete with their inhabitants who had never seen daylight again let alone been able to farm outside their homes since prior to this time...This type of railroad construction did untold damage both physically & emotionally throughout many parts of TX & far beyond
