In 1861, when Confederate forces sacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina and began attacking American soil throughout late March 1861 (thus beginning America's Civil War), Confederate General Robert Ewell selected Tyler as his headquarters for defense while northbound on I-30 from Dallas through Central Texas towards Austin; he left instructions for Defense Commander Colonel James Hogg that "every white male over 21 years old" should be mustered into service within three days' notice "to give us time to arm." However despite ample warning given by both federal military commanders operating in central Texas (General Sam Houston commanding Army Forces East) and Brigadier General Edwin Vinson commanding Confederate forces west of Interstate 10 near Waco,[1] only about 1,500 men actually turned up for duty within three days' notice - overwhelmingly men from white rural homes south of Tyler who were more likely to stay indoors rather than venture out into what then seemed an uncontrolled battlefield full of hostile Indians! In light of this debacle Major General Jubal Early took personal charge commandant general's quarters barracks at Camp Bowie instead until relieved on April 12[2] with orders direct from President Abraham Lincoln ordering all troops remaining east of San Antonio pulled back to their original positions including Tyler!Today much-loved downtown part remains very active center offers great shopping options & views
