Tyler, Texas is a city in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gregg County. Tyler's economy relies heavily on agriculture and ranching, with a significant cotton crop and cattle industry. The first Europeans to visit Tyler were Spanish traders in 1519, who named it "Travis" after their leader Francisco de Zúñiga y Cuyo. In 1836, General Sam Houston sent Infantry lieutenant Colonel James Fenton to try to trade horses with the Mexican government in Veracruz; he discovered that the Mexicans were not interested and abandoned his mission. Fenton returned in 1837 and found that there was an Austin branch of the Santa Anna Brotherhood of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) living near what is now Monterey Park in Travis County. The Mormons had left Mexico for Utah because they were persecuted by Mexico's Catholic church. A group of Houstons moved to Austin and rented land near Mount Pleasant where they built the first house on July 4, 1837, which became known as Mount Pleasant." In 1840 Samuel Colt leased from Daniel Boone 300 acres (1 km²) northeast of Tyler for $100 per year to grow corn for guns he was making for American Independence. In 1886, founder Gifford Hinchcliffe donated land to create what would become downtown Tyler; construction began that year and finished two years later. Today downtown is one of America's most vibrant entertainment districts with several high-traffic venues including The Capitol Theatre (which opened in 1907), All Souls Unitarian Church (founded in 1868), First Baptist Church (1887),and Second Baptist Church (1910). Downtown also includes a variety of small businesses and restaurants along Main Street SE which has been called "the most pedestrian friendly street in America". On December 6th 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewart Johnston died after being wounded at Stones River Bridge while leading Confederate forces against Union forces under General George Buell near Jacksonport Kentucky
