The first gunnery school was established in Tyler and classes began on October 1, 1897. The school closed in 1907 but reopened two years later under new name, "The Military School for Boys". From 1917 to 1919, the school was located at Old Hickory Arsenal. On January 3rd, 1921 it merged with "The Military School for Girls" which had been founded by Mrs. Elizabeth Aveland (1851-1927). It is interesting to note that this merger occurred only a few months after Mrs. Aveland's death. Gunnery schools were also opened in Carthage (Oklahoma) in 1915 and Lubbock (Texas) in 1923; however these schools closed after just a few weeks of operation due to World War II. Thereafter gunnery schools operated out of local arsenals until 1949 when they were reestablished at Travis Air Force Base. Gun targets have continued to be used within Tyler through today and are still popular among shooters throughout the state; however, their popularity may be waning because of increased regulation from government entities such as law enforcement agencies and hunting regulations
