Tomball was founded in 1873 by John H. Tomlinson and named for his father, James Tomlinson. The first post office was established in 1874 and the first store opened in 1875. Tomball is located at (36.548534, -95.645359). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which is land and (2%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,652 people, 1,022 households, and 776 families residing in the town. The population density was 517 people per square mile (207/km²). There were 1,030 housing units at an average density of 231 per square mile (90/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White and 3% African American. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 0%.
