Tomball, Texas is a small town located in the Houston-Galveston-Houston metropolitan area. The population of Tomball was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2000 and has grown rapidly since then with an estimated population of over 200,000 as of 2010. Tomball is located on I-10 just south of the city limits and is bordered by the Clear Creek River to the east and west and Loop 610 West to the north. Tomball was founded in 1887 by Jens Jensen and his family. In 1907, Tomball became part of Galveston County. The old cotton plantation that now serves as Tomball's downtown core was acquired by Rancho Santa Fe in 1892. Today, rancho Santa Ferian homes are still found throughout town, along with several churches from that period including First Baptist Church (founded 1889), Christ Presbyterian Church (1891), Methodist Episcopal Church (1893), Stonewall Jackson Methodist EpiscopalChurch (1895) and El Paso Independent School District #1 (1901). The first scopes were brought into use in Tomball at a local church picnic on July 20th 1895 when A & W Bellows put up their 4x50mm focal length telescope for use at a local fairgrounds nearby. This early telescope would go on to become one of Texas Instruments' most popular models used during World War II for military reconnaissance purposes due its shortThrow distance making it ideal for long range detection targets such as fighter planes or bombers passing overhead. The first professional observatory opened in Tomball in 1906 when Drs John Matson and Frank Hoyle set up their 1 - 8 inch refractor telescope at Park View Cemetery which later became known as Lone Star Observatory after its merger with other observatories across Texas including Dallas Observatory (#1) & Austin Observatory (#2). At this time professional astronomers were beginning to develop methods for observing large celestial objects using very large telescopes instead of simple lenses/screens placed close together on mountsaintops like those used today! In 1935, Drs William Burch bought Park View Cemetery property adjacent to Lone Star Observatory becoming the first person ever to own land within what is nowTomball city limits! This purchase marked the beginning of an era where donations from individuals helped support scientific research within our community through grants/aid programs like Space Flight Center's Astrobiology Institute which continues today! In 1946 Drs Harry Chandler formed Southern Illinois University Carbondale Diagnostic Radiology Laboratory creating what would eventually become Southern Illinois University Medical Center! During this time Southern Illinois University Carbondale also built one of the largest single purpose radiological equipment stores in North America!! It wasn't until 1979 when Valleyview Elementary School closed down leaving only one classroom inside their building which served as a storage facility until it was purchased by Home Depot circa 1990!!! It has been said that if Valleyview had kept operating they might have been able to help pay for Stadium Expansion project however sadly enough that didn't happen :( . Over time many businesses have closed down around town but thankfully there are numerous historical buildings remaining standing testament to some truly amazing moments during these years including: Pioneer Place Mall(now defunct), Aquarium Research Laboratories(closed 2003), Old Executive Building(now home to Home Depot), Thomas Edison High School Gymnasium(closed 2006) & much more...
