Tomball, Texas is located in the Midwestern United States and is known for its production of optical devices such as telescopes, microscopes and rifle sights. Tomball was founded in 1907 by a group of businessmen led by George Prentice. The original company name was "George Prentice Optics". In 1951, the company became part of Hughes Aircraft. In 1998, Hughes merged with Raytheon to form Lockheed Martin. The history of optical accessories in Tomball began with George Prentice's purchase of a microscope from Sperry & Co., Incorporated in 1907. He renamed the company "Prentice Optical" and began producing microscopes and riflesights at his home on a small lot next to his business office on West Loop Avenue in Tomball. From this small operation, Prentice Optical quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of optical products in America. In 1951, when Hughes Aircraft merged with Raytheon to form Lockheed Martin, George Prentice Optics continued to be an integral part of that corporation until its closure in 1998. During these years, many important milestones were achieved within the field of optical accessories: first came the introduction of metal-oxide semiconductor lasers (MOSLabs), which allowed for increased brightness and clarity while reducing noise levels; second came development of high-quality digital photo sensors; third came introduction into common use (and eventually standardization) of mirrorless camera systems; fourth came establishment as a leading supplier both nationally and internationallyof advanced optoelectronic components used in imaging technology; finally arrived inclusion within industry-standard lists (e.g., CSA/JIS Z87)of popular optics products

Tomball is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the Tomball Valley region of central Austin County on the eastern edge of the University of Texas at Austin campus. The population was 43,566 as of 2010 census[1]. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Tomball was founded by farmers and ranchers in 1874 as a small town called Tomball Springs. In 1907, Tomball was named after General Tom Browning who fought in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. In 1965, when Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area was created, Tomball became a part of it and its government changed from township to city status. From its inception until 2004, Tomball had no mayor or council members; all decisions were made by City Manager Harry Storms with help from his staff. On January 1st, 2004,[2] Mayor John Cook took office as Councilmember for District 3 with powers over economic development and public works.[3] On July 1st, 2009,[4] Councilmember Kevin White took office as Mayor effective immediately following the resignation of Mayor Cook due to health reasons[5]. Tomball is a small town in south Texas. It was founded in 1879 by settlers from Missouri. The town grew quickly, and by the 1920s it had over 4,000 residents. Tomball became an important community because of its location on the Santa Fe Railroad. The railroad helped to support local industries and made Tomball the center of a small but growing area. The economy has changed little since the 1990s, and today the town is home to a few hundred residents and a few businesses. Tomball’s history began with many pioneers who came to this area during the 1830s and 1840s seeking new land to settle. Some of these early settlers were named Tomball after their hometown in Missouri, while others may have been inspired by what they saw around them – such as the Santa Fe Railroad which connected Tomball with Albuquerque, New Mexico. By 1879, however, most of the original settlers had moved away or died off before they could build any homes or start any businesses in their new territory. That same year, however, another group of men arrived in Tomball from Missouri looking for land to homestead. They were led by James Hoggart who decided that he would try his hand at farming here instead of waiting for help from his family back home; he did this alone and without help from anyone else in Tomballs fledgling community. The first crops grown here were cotton (a crop that didn’t exist at this time) and potatoes; both plants fared well due to lack of other available resources at the time. In later years some other staple crops such as hay were started but quickly abandoned due to lack of variety or moisture content when temperatures got too hot or cold outside). By 1925 only two families remained living in TomBALL – those within Mr & Mrs Robinson’s residence on Main Street and those working for Wm Weaver on neighboring Farm Road 2nd St & US Highway 59th Rte 1st Ave (then known as US 281st Ave).
