Tomball is a small town in the county of Tomball, Texas, United States. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tomball-Clearwater-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Tomball comes from the Choctaw word "tombal" meaning "place of burial." The first post office in Tomball was established on November 3, 1892. The town was named for J.W. Tomlinson, an early settler and cattleman who donated land to the city for development. In 1907, construction began on what would become Tomball High School; it opened in 1909. As Texas gained recognition as a state in 1850, Tomball became one of its earliest settlements and developed into a small agricultural community with three stores and two churches. A school district was formed in 1912 (later renamed Clearwater Independent School District), which included Tomball; it operated until 1923 when centralisdiction of education within Clearwater County became effective. In 1960, an act authorizing annexation by Fort Worth rendered all previously annexed towns unincorporated within that city limits - including much of what is now Tomballdown - forming today's portion of Glasscock Township adjacent to Fort Worth proper
