Tomball, Texas is a city located in Samford County, Alabama, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. Tomball was founded in 1892 by John E. Tomlinson and named for him. It is the home of Southern Methodist University (SMU), one of the largest universities in Texas and one of the largest private universities in the United States. The City of Tomball has been an incorporated municipality since 1912 and it is governed by a three-member commission with mayoral approval. In 1911, Tomlinson donated 3 shotguns to SMU as a gift for their new athletic department. In 1932, Hap Arnold donated $5,000 to help build Memorial Stadium on campus which later became home to the Houston Oilers football team and later also served as home to NCAA Division I football programs such as Arkansas Razorbacks and Auburn Tigers. In 1941, Wernher von Braun donated $10,000 towards building Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). MSFC was eventually built on what was once Tomlinson Field House and now known as Von Braun Hall on campus. In 1971-1972, city officials began looking into whether or not they should form their own police department after seeing that other municipalities were doing so without any issue. On October 2nd 1972 city commissioners voted 5-2 to form a Police Department with Mayor Don Moore being the main proponent behind this decision stating "If we don’t have our own police department then who will? We can’t just rely on sheriff’s deputies or county deputies because there are always going to be some issues." The City of Tomball currently employs around 30 sworn officers plus 10 civilians who work out of two substations within city limits - one providing security for athletic events at SMU and another providing general law enforcement services throughout town outside of school hours. During World War II, both food production and military storage were important factors affecting growth in Tomball; however, bombing raids during the war destroyed most of town’s businesses so little development occurred after 1945 other than new housing developments built around what remained of town center including Stanley Park Drive and Elmendorf Boulevard which remain some of today’s busiest commercial corridors within town limits today despite heavy damage from Hurricane Ike in 2008 which destroyed many homes throughout much of town leaving only limited salvageable evidence remaining from that time period Finally, following recommendations made by then Mayor Earl Fenton following an investigation into irregularities involving kickbacks given to various City officials during his tenure as mayor it was decided that annexation should take place between neighboring Midland and Odessa communities resulting in what would eventually become known as “The Lone Star City”; with this change effective July 1st 1959 residents finally began calling their new home “Tomball” rather than simply Buffalo Bayou Townsite where they had lived since 1881
