Tomball is a city in Tomball County, Texas, United States. The population was 25,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and has a humid subtropical climate. The city began as an agricultural community in 1872 on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. A cotton gin was built there in 1886 and the town became known for its dry goods stores and gun magazines, which were popular with Texans who wanted to buy guns without leaving their homes. In 1907, Tomball's first electric streetlights were installed and by 1920 the town had acquired its current name of Tomball after Mayor James T. Pendergast donated land for that purpose. The first post office opened in 1911 and remained in operation until it closed in 1924 due to low postal rates demanded by competitors like Dallas. In 1925, industrial development started along Buffalo Bayou with several large textile mills opening up around Tomball City Limits; however, this growth spurt stopped after World War II when steel production became more common in Texas and local demand for firearms diminished. In 1956, Tomball City Limits was merged into neighboring Garland County so that all residents withincity limits would be treated equally under law; however, this merge did not result in any real change because Garland County lacked power to make much impact on the lives of its residents other than occasional building permits orroad repairs. In 1972 Zucker Enterprises bought out most of the remaining founding shareholders of Garland County Commissioners District No 3 (the predecessor county to today's Travis County) resulting in what is now known as "the originalification period". During this time many changes took place including annexations from other adjacent counties while some longtime citizens still felt they were not receiving their fair share due to strongarming by Zucker Enterprises lobbyists; however these complaints soon quieted down as Zucker rapidly transitioned from being a businessperson rather than a politician into becoming one of Texas' most powerful men thanks largely to his connections with then-Governor George W. Bush Sr.. In 2006 Zucker sold his holdings in Travis County back to George W."
