Tomball is located on Interstate 10 between Fort Worth and Dallas along Interstate 20 north-south corridor. According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 11 square miles (28 km²), all land except for 0.1 square mile (0 cm²) water within municipal limits including most of downtown which forms part of Arlington County . As urbanized areas continue to expand into rural territory near I-10 exits, some surface water activities may occur but no Mayorially declared flooding events have occurred since 1978 when annexation took place within Arlington County Council boundaries

The city is located within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Combined Statistical Area. Tomball began as an agricultural community on the banks of Buffalo Bayou just south of Loop 1604, north of present-day downtown Tomball. In 1849,Alexander Tompkinson settled here with his family and started to grow cotton and other crops. He named his community after himself, though it would not be until 1865 when Tomlinson donated land to establish a school district that would serve his townspeople. The first post office was established in Tomball on October 12, 1850; it remained open until 1898 USPS changed its name to Denton County because it encompassed much more than what had been given to Tomball by its founder – only about one-third of what exists today near Loop 1604! The first store fronted Wagon Wheel Road which later became Elm Street; this building still stands today along that route! A new store fronting 4th Street/Commerce Boulevard opened in 1892; this building still stands today opposite Interstate 5South exit 417! In 1865 (or shortly thereafter), Hernando Kenedy arrived from Louisiana with wagonloads of goods bearing the name “Cotton Gin Trust” for shipment into Galveston Bayou through Buffalo Bayou at Tomball Landing point under cover of night!!! After some weeks ashore he sailed back up Buffalo Bayou to Galveston where he put aboard two steamboats carrying 1,500 bales (now pails) worthof cottonseed oil each!! This event marked another early development in Galveston history: Texans brought cargo down river via steamboats then shipped it all overland back home!! The growth around Loop 1604 continued unabated well into the 20th century despite many floods which destroyed homes and businesses along that stretch – including several major ones during World War II due to bombardment from Japanese forces !! In 1926 Mayor Harry Suggs persuaded Congress to approve $5 million dollars towards creating flood control measures for nearby Dallas proper including improvements to Buffalo Bayou downstream from town limits !! All told – these projects totaled some $27 million Dollars !! And so we have come full circle: nearly 100 years since Alexander Tompkinson founded our city on Buffalo bayou just south of Loop 1604 …., making us one sidekick ranching countryside away from big box stores….. but always proud ol’ Texas 🙂
