In 1881, the Texas Legislature authorized the purchase of land at The Colony in order to establish a new settlement. The first residents of The Colony were 14 men and women who journeyed from Missouri in freight trains. They arrived on October 15, 1881, and began building their homes. By 1888, the population had grown to 100 people. The Colony was initially a trading post and later became an agricultural center. In 1907, it was renamed Corpus Christi after Danish pastor Ole Christensen (1785-1860). The name change came about because of objections from some of the town's original residents who thought that Corpus Christi would be more likely to reflect English culture than Danish culture. On November 15, 1912, The Colony was destroyed by a fire that started in a barn and quickly expanded until it reached most of the homes. More than 60% of the buildings were destroyed or damaged; only 3 out of 10 residents survived. After the fire, many settlers emigrated to other parts of Texas while others continued to live at The Colony for a short time before moving again or returning home in 1913.

They raised crops and hunted game until 1905 when they decided to move to present-day Vernon County to establish a more permanent settlement. In 1915, the settlers formed the first school board in Vernon County and soon after organized themselves into what became known as The Colony. The town was originally named for Brigham Young's father-in-law, John Wirthlin, who had donated land for the colony. Wirthlin died in 1916 but his Donation still provides most of the funding for local schools today. Today, The Colony boasts dozens of businesses including two banks (the Bank of Commerce and First National Bank), several churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - Smith Chapel and Zion Lutheran Church), three grocery stores (Piggly Wiggly, Miller's grain market and Aldrich grocery store), four restaurants (Foster's Cafe, Sly & Slick's BBQ Joint, Big Joe's Barbecue Shop and Golden Corral restaurant) as well as numerous homes from which residents commute to their jobs or enjoy village life outside their doors.
