The Colony, Texas was founded in 1846 by James Fenton and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the English colony of Virginia that had been established in 1814. In 1850, the town had a population of 100 people. By 1870, the town had grown to 1,300 people and it became an agricultural center. In 1908, the United States Congress passed a bill designating the Colony as a National Monument. The monument is located in downtown Colonie today. Today, Colonie is a small community with approximately 235 residents. It has a post office, grocery store, bank, and several churches. There are also several businesses that have remained in operation since before Colonie was designated as a National Monument: Pogue's Feed Store (established 1886), Jingle Bells Grocery (1892), Colonial Post Office Building & Mail Room (1898), Dutch Bros., Inc.(1910-present), and Pioneer Cemetery (1911). They built an octagonal-shaped telescope called The Starlite reflector telescope which weighed over one ton and could see objects up to seventy miles away! This telescope was used by both Mr. Fenton and Mrs. Fenton until they sold it in 1865 to Drury Noble who continued using it for astronomical research until his death in 1876. As times changed so did Telescope technology; during World War II some new types of telescopes were developed such as airborne radar telescopes which could see beyond what traditional scopes could see! One notable scientist who worked on these types of telescopes was Edwin Hubble who eventually discovered that galaxies existed outside our Milky Way galaxy! After America’s involvement in World War II ended there were changes taking place within astronomy; Princeton astronomersbegin working on developing computerized astrophysics software known as GALEX!. This software helped scientists figure out how stars interact with each other inside galaxies! After almost 50 years of development this software finally proved useful enough for astronomers to use it to study supernovas! However during this time Telescopes still played an important role in astronomy!! The colonists were subsistence farmers, living off the land. There was little industry or trade in the colony, and most goods were obtained from nearby Mexico. In response, Congress passed the Act of Confederation, which granted self-government to the colonies but did not recognize their independent status. In 1847, when war with Mexico began, some of the colonists deserted to join Mexican forces. Others tried to build a resistance movement but were unsuccessful. By 1850, most of the colonists had fled or been killed by Mexican forces. Some remaining settlers continued to live in isolation until they were contacted by American authorities in 1881 who offered them amnesty and citizenship if they relocated to one of America's three reservations: Dakota Territory east of Nebraska; Arizona Territory west of Interstate 10; or New Mexico Territory south of Interstate 10
