The Colony, Texas was founded in 1859 by James W. Hogg and his brothers. The town was located on the Verde River near present-day Midland. The original settlers were farmers and ranchers who grew corn, cotton, tobacco, and other crops. In 1870, the railroad came to town and changed the economy of the town. The Railroad erected a depot in what is now downtown Colony. In 1872, a post office was established in Colony and mail service began between Colony and Midland. By 1880, there were thirty residents in Colony. By 1890, there were ninety-six residents in Colony with a school system that included one teacher and six students. In 1898, the community voted to move from its location on the Verde River to establish a city limits boundary between Midland County and Grant County because of economic problems caused by agricultural specialization within each county. This move created new challenges for colonists as they had no means of transportation or communication within their city limits; this led to increased competition for land within city limits which contributed to social unrest among colonists over control of resources essential for survival such as water supplies and grazing areas necessary for livestock production

Due to its close proximity to Austin and its large population of students attending public universities such as Texas A&M University (Aggies), Rice University, Baylor University, and Southern Methodist University (SMU), The Colony has become known for being one of the most vibrant communities on campus. This prominence comes from both its natural resources - including oil wells that are used for production of asphaltand gas wells - as well as its active civic engagement which includes several events each year hosting hundreds of participants from all over central TX!
