Despite this difficult experience, The Colony continued to thrive until around 1900 when it slowly began to decline due to various factors including economic recession combined with rising fire risk in an increasingly urban setting. However, despite these setbacks, The Colony has always been an important part ofTexas history because it represents one of the first successful settlements in that state

The Colony, Texas was founded in 1836 as the Republic of Texas. It served as a state from 1839 until its annexation by Mexico in1846. The colony was located on the east bank of the Brazos River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Austin and about 25 miles (40 km) north of San Antonio. The land for the colony was purchased from the local Indian population by Captain John C. Fremont and his settlement of Fort Worth in 1824. After Mexican independence was proclaimed in 1845, Texas became an independent republic with a capital at Austin; however, San Antonio continued to serve as its primary city. In 1850, Austin replaced San Antonio as the capital when Mexico seceded from Texas and became a separate nation again. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Texas during the American Civil War; some colonists fled to nearby Arkansas before ultimately settling in what is now Houston Heights near downtown Austin. In 1870, after nine years of conflict and $2 million worth of damage done to infrastructure by Union forces, Confederate General Sam Houston surrendered at Camp Hood outside Dallas; this ended Reconstruction in Texas and allowed white Southerners to take control of government institutions and businesses while black residents were relegated to low-paying labor roles. The Colony lost almost all its economic vitality following this event but continued to exist until it dissolved in 1924 when federal law prohibited states from annexing other states without their consent.
