Harrison Gray Otis succeeded him as governor of Texas in 1861 and ordered Fisk's plantation closed down. The resulting tension between whites and blacks led to bloodshed at Mission Creek between November 6th and 7th 1862 when white men seeking revenge for being expelled from the colony killed six black men and wounded several others
