In 1845, the community became independent from neighboring Santa Fe County and formed its own government with a governor, senatus (a kind of deliberative body), court system, school district, and religious congregation. By 1850, colonists had built more than 350 homes and businesses throughout what is now McLennan County. Many of these settlers abandoned Colony after its defeat in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). However, some returned after victory in that conflict brought about Prussia’s withdrawal from Mexico following Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. At this time, many Texans decided that they wanted independence from Mexico rather than be subject to its rule. The Colony thrived until 1864 when it was destroyed by an earthquake that struck Austin at night while most people were asleep or working outside their homes. The disaster killed many people and damaged thousands of buildings; it is still one of the deadliest earthquakes in Texas history. Aftermath efforts led to the founding of Austin as a city in 1870; however, much of what survived from Colony would later be lost during various floods and fires over ensuing years. In recent decades there have been occasional efforts to reestablish communication between colonies living near each other but these have so far lacked success due largely to present-day digital media constraints

The Colony was named for James Fenton, a British immigrant who had arrived in 1835. The settlement was located on the present day side of the Rio Grande near modern-day Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The colony consisted of about forty men and women led by David Nance and Nathaniel Banks. In 1837, Banks became the first white settler to die in Texas when he was killed by Indians at an Indian encampment near San Antonio.
