The Colony, Texas was founded in 1848 as a small farming community located on the banks of the Trinity River. The settlement quickly grew into a town, and by 1850 it had a population of over 150 people. By 1861, the Colony had become an outpost of the newly formed Republic of Texas. In 1865, following the Union victory at Gettysburg, Colonel Robert E. Lee decided to move his headquarters from Richmond to The Colony. There he built a strong military presence to protect South Texas from Mexican intervention. Over time, The Colony became known for its firearms industry and its gunsmiths who produced many rifles and shotguns for local use and export. With South Texas under Union control, Confederate forces began to arrive in large numbers in search of loot and arms. In late 1867, Confederate General James Foust moved his army into central Texas with orders to attack The Colony. On April 14th, Foust's force arrived at The Colony and attacked). After a brief battle lasting several hours, Confederate forces withdrew without taking any casualties or plundering any buildings within the town walls. Still determined to capture whatever weapons or munitions were available within The Colony, Confederate forces returned two days later but found no living human beings or animals within sight nor any sign that anything had been disturbed during their absence In light of this failure, Confederate General Jumper ordered his troops not to enter further into town - instead they advanced northwards towards Wichita Falls where they would rendezvous with General Pemberton's main body some miles away On April 16th 1865 at 3:00pm Central Time (10pm UT), Confederate Forces rode through open gates of The Colony Proper on horseback and entered without warning or resistance from residents who were either too frightened or panicked to offer any opposition Once inside the town boundaries there was immediate panic as members of both sides came running out from all directions with guns drawn Aftermath described by one resident as "A last chance for escape; we are surrounded now [and] could be slaughtered if captured". After around ten minutesinois relatives managed finallyto get outside where they saw corpses littering every street corner but ultimately did not make it back in time for dinner that night .. .about 30 men including officers were killed outright upon entering alone while about 50 more were wounded .. .the remaining residents then surrendered unconditionally without another shot being fired

The Browns farmed tobacco and cotton until 1893 when they decided to move away from agriculture and open a store which they did successfully for three years before closing due to economic reasons in 1896. In 1907, John Waddell purchased land adjacent to Colony Creek from J.W Brown for $2,000 cash which he used as pastureland for his hay crop and cattle until 1914 when he built what is now known as Waddell House which remains standing today all thanks to him! In 1915-16, Gertrude (Moses) Pogue moved from Illinois with her husband Marshall Pogue who had also migrated there seeking opportunity along with other farmers of Smith County at that time who faced difficult times due to low commodity prices during World War I; these hard times led Gertrude Pogue and her husband Marshall Pogue to establish themselves as successful merchants serving local needs out of their own grocery store located on Main Street until their death in 1984! thereafter Colony's history continued through various partnerships between individuals or groups over time including Brushy Hollow Baptist Church becoming one of many churches established near Colonies boundaries especially during this time period when fewer resources existed than today’s ruralSmith County!

For many residents of The Colony, life was tough but it also offered them some great opportunities that they never could have found anywhere else! In 1849 Captain Kenedy decided to sell his share of the colony to another group of investors who intended to make it even more successful than before! This new group set about building more houses and creating more businesses including an flour mill which became one ofAustin's most important commercial landmarks! Despite all these efforts though, by 1850 things had started to unravel at The Colony as people began leaving in large numbers due to financial instability or illness! In 1851 Captain Kenedy sold his remaining shares back to the original investors but he never forgot how much he loved living in his own little town – until he died suddenly just six months later!

The colonists were determined to make their new home a better place for themselves and their families. They built their own homes, started businesses, and planted crops.
