The settlers built their homes and outbuildings from logs and clay that they collected from the local springs. They named their new settlement after a colony of Englishmen who had landed on Houston Bay in 1691. In 1887, the Railroad Commission created an agricultural fair at the edge of town to promote planting and harvesting of crops such as cotton and corn. The fair attracted other farmers and their families to move to The Colony for various reasons including access to markets, affordable housing, good schools, clean streets and easy transportation. In 1924-1925, construction began on a municipally owned water system that became one of Hudspeth County's first major public works projects. In 1951-1952, The Colony hosted the United States Olympic trials for track athletes; this event helped increase international exposure for Hudspeth County students who were then able to attend college in nearby Austin or Dallas. In 1957-58, construction began on what would become known as "the thrust" - a long viaduct that crossed Mockingbird Lake between The Colony and Fort Worth - making it easier for commuters to get around town without having to take roads throughout rural Hudspeth County. Although many residents active in local businesses have passed away over time - such as storekeepers Elmer “Dutch” Smith Sr., his son Dutch Jr., grocery store owner Joe Benton – many descendants still live in The Colony today and continue contributing materially to its economy both through business ownership and volunteerism.

The Colony is significant because it played an important role in early Texan history and because it remains today one of the most historically significant towns in Hidalgo County
The Colony was a small community of colonists located in what is now the city of Austin, Texas. It was founded on April 6, 1836 by men from Kentucky and Tennessee who had come to seek new land to settle. The colony grew quickly due to its location and natural resources, but it soon ran into financial troubles. In 1839, the colony's leaders decided to move the colony to a more permanent location near what is now downtown Austin. The Colony continued to grow after its move, but it eventually fell apart due to economic reasons and internal strife.
