In 1865, The Colony became an official U.S. military base when it was selected as the site for the first U.S. army arsenal west of the Mississippi River. It served as such until 1898 when it reverted back to civilian control under President McKinley's order that all military fortifications should be turned over to local authorities within 24 hours after their activation or closure (Lopez v United States). After World War I ended, The Colony experienced a period of growth due to its location between Dallas and Austin; however, this growth stopped during the 1920s because railroads came through El Paso rather than Dallas/Houston which increased commuting time between those cities. Today, The Colony is home to a population of approximately 2,500 people who are mostly farmers and ranchers with some industry involvement (mainly manufacturing). There are also few businesses other than small grocery stores and services located outside of town limits; most residents rely on agriculture or ranching income for their livelihoods. There has been no recent significant development or change within The Colony since John Wesley Powell purchased land here more than 175 years ago
