However, despite these challenges, progress was made over time culminating with the arrival of more than one thousand colonists by 1840 at what is now downtown San Antonio . Despite its initial struggles The Colony helped contribute significantly totxas growth as a major center for culture and commerce during this time period
The Colony, Texas was founded on November 16, 1836 by the Confederate States of America as a new state in the south. The name comes from the Spanish word colonia, meaning "a place to live." It was named for President George Washington's original attempt to create a slave-free colony in present-day Virginia. The first settlers were Englishmen and Welsh Catholics who had fled religious persecution in Great Britain. They arrived in small boats and sailed upriver to what is now Houston County. When they reached the mouth of Buffalo Bayou, they decided against continuing their journey and disembarked on a promontory overlooking Buffalo Bayou. From this location, they built their first fortification which served them until 1840 when they abandoned it due to lack of food and resources. In 1845, the Texas Legislature approved creation of an independent republic within the United States; the Colony became Texas Republic on October 21st that year.
