By 1860-1861, colony had more than 1,200 residents and it boasted a hotel (the first in Texas), three churches (oneMethodist and two Baptist), six stores (including one that made soap), four wharves (for shipping goods across Buffalo Bayou), two cotton plantations with about 50 slaves each and five schoolhouses for teaching children between December 1861 and May 1865 during Reconstruction times.
