Fort Fenton served as an important depot on the Santa Fe Trail which connected Texas with Mexico City and also served as a military outpost against Indian attacks along the route. Because of its strategic location, Fort Fenton became one of the most important civilian settlements in central Grimes County during the Late 19th century. A school was started in 1850 and growth continued until 1956 when Enterprise High School opened nearby and took over much of the town's business functions
