Within two years, they had founded the town of Colony on the site of an old Indian settlement. In 1857, Bowie sold the town to John Hogg for $1,500. The town gradually grew until it reached its current size in 1870 when it became a county seat. In 1903, it became a city with incorporation.

The Stover-Dixon Dam on Buffalo Bayou caused a flood in 1886 which destroyed most of the town and killed many people. After an extensive rebuild, Colony began hosting events such as rodeos and agricultural fairs until 2000 when drinking water supplies were interrupted due to oil spills in nearby Crane Lake. In response to this problem, the town constructed an underground aquifer that provides water for all residents without having to go outside to get it. The Aquifer has already saved the town from bankruptcy twice and will do so again provided that no more spills occur near their source (Crane Lake). colony also consists of several shopping centers including two anchors - GVH Supermarket & Grissom's Ford - both with over 260 stores within easy walking distance making it one of the largest shopping malls in TX., as well as numerous restaurants and bars located around central square

Today, little remains of The Colony except for its nameakes: Colony Coffee House and Colony Creamery.
