It’s one of America’s fastest-growing cities – ranking eighth among large U.S cities with 25 or more ZIP codes – thanks to its strong economy and welcoming environment for growth companies. It has been called “the Silicon Valley of North Central Texas” because so many tech startups have originated here since 2007 – when Google announced it was establishing a research campus here! The Texas City area was founded in 1836 by the surveyors John W. Cook and James F. Caldwell, when they surveyed the new town of Brownsville on the Texas side of the Brazos River. Texas City was originally named after General Sam Houston's home state of Tennessee, but it reverted to its original name in 1852 when it became part of Mexico. The city's first mayor was A.J. Gallagher, who served from 1853 to 1861. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Texans City sided with Confederate forces and pro-slavery sentiment led to its destruction two years later by Union troops under General Francisco Rangel y Uribe. In 1892, a railroad depot and freight yard were built at Texas City and it quickly became an important rail junction for cotton farmers west of Austin along the Central Expressway (later I-10). By 1912, Texas City had over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents. As cotton production declined in later decades, Texaco replaced oil as the city's mainstay until its closure in 2001; however some remnants of Texaco remain today such as a largeTexaco refinery on West Main Street which is also home to a museum about Texaco history and culture.
The growth of Texas City began in the early 1800s when settlers arrived in what is now Texas City. At that time, the area was a remote and unsettled region, and there were few opportunities for agriculture or development. However, over time, Texans City became a major center of trade and commerce in the region. The city's landmark buildings include the old courthouse which was built in 1848, and the TX Central Railroad Depot which was constructed in 1851. In addition to its commercial importance, Texas City also served as a important military stronghold during the Mexican-American War. The city was eventually renamed Fort Worth after General John Foust's victory at San Jacinto Heights.
