Texas City is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in Hidalgo County. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area and is included in the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington Combined Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Texas City was first settled by families from San Antonio de Bexar in 1836, who were along the San Antonio River and its tributaries as they journeyed to new land east of what is now downtown Austin. The town's growth continued during World War II as cattle drives brought men and equipment into or through its central square where businesses such as Jiggs' Store made cotton goods available for local consumers at low prices (the price for a bushel of cotton would be $1 then). The post office opened in 1909 and remained open until it closed in 1976; since then, Texaco has been the town's only commercial employer. Texaco became an oil company with its original refinery being built on Railroad Avenue northeast of present day Texaco Park after nearby Refinery Row was destroyed by fire on November 5, 1911 (in what would later become known as "The Great Texaco Fire"). The old refinery complex still stands today next to Interstate 35E just south of TX 346/Hwy 183 which leads northwest out of town onto I-35W towards Waco; access to it can be found off I-35E southbound between FM 19606 and FM 7277 just past TX 344/Hwy 183 (exit 172). A commemorative plaque marking this event can be found near US 281/TX 346 about two miles northwest of I-35W exit 173). In 1944 Generalanger George Patton stopped his advance from Bastogne Glacier outside Nancy while leading Operation Market Garden across Belgium near Arnhem – he ordered all fuel supplies delivered directly to his units via truckloads instead of waiting for French roads to reopen following winter repairs – when he discovered that German tanks had reached within striking distance of Nancy; Patton called upon his subordinates to jam all exits leading into town so no one could get away without fuel or supplies! This event helped start what would eventually become known as "Patton's Corridor."
