The first European settlement in Texas was by the Spanish on a small island in the Texan Gulf of Mexico, known as Guanajuato. The island was abandoned after a storm in 1549. The first permanent English settlers were Capt. John Smith and his men who landed on an uninhabited bayou near San Antonio in 1718. They built the first permanent structure, a hunting lodge, on May 6, 1718. English traders began trading with the Mexicans around this time and soon there was trade across the Rio Grande River to what is now Mexico City. By 1821, English traders had founded Fort Worth and began trading with Mexican colonists east of the river.
