On July 6, 1836, the Republic of Texas was established with land that included present-day Dallas, Texas. The Mexican government claimed the area as part of their state of Coahuila and Tejas. A treaty was signed in November 1835 between Mexico and the United States to open up this area for exploration. On January 6, 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna became president of Mexico after winning a presidential election that ended years of instability. Santa Anna ordered his general Francisco Xavier Zaragoza to start a military campaign in what is now Central Texas against American settlers known as the Texan Revolution. Mexican forces were successful at driving out most Americans but they failed to take control of the major cities like Austin or Dallas. In February 1840, Mexican troops burned down Austin while American volunteers defended it; this event is commonly known as the Battle of Austin (or "the Burning of Austin"). In December 1850, Congress passed an act creating San Antonio County with land east of Houston along Ubersdorf Creek and north from Gonzales River on Trinity Bayou. This gave Texans living east of Houston access to public lands that had been reserved for Mexicans only. The county seat was named San Antonio because it had been recommended by President James Kiefer Polk during his presidency in order to draw more Democrats into politics in Texas. On April 15, 1856, San Antonio became state capital when it was elevated from its original location near Washington City northwest on Whatley Road (now I-10) across from PRESBYTERIAN University
