Texarkana, Texas is a town located in the southwestern corner of the state of Texas. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The first settlers in Texarkana were German immigrants who arrived from Bavaria in 1847. By 1865, there were over 100 Germans living in the town. Because it was a remote and Whiskey- sparsely populated area, gunmaking didn't take off until after World War I when guns started to be shipped into Texarkana from Chicago for sale to American soldiers stationed there. In 1916, John Ritchie opened his first outfitters' store in Texarkana and soon began selling firearms to local farmers and ranchers. In 1927, he opened what would become known as "Ritchie's Gun Shop" which continues to operate today as a museum dedicated to John Ritchie and his trade. The shop has been operational continuously since 1927. The original building that now stands on Main Street in Texarkana was erected by George Wickersham in 1881 as an addition to his farmstead on Stone Creek Road near present day Elmwood Cemetery. Wickersham had purchased land east of town from James Bormann for $1 per acre (the price then stood at $10 per acre). He sold lots here for $5 each and built himself a log cabin using lumber brought overland from Wichita Falls by wagon trainloads only two weeks earlier! This self-sufficient pioneer community thrived until about 1910 when railroad construction reached Texarkana and destroyed much of what had been built before hand by these early pioneers - including most of Wickersham's own sumptuous home edifice on Stone Creek Road! Today you can still see evidence of thistraditional rural lifestyle: circa 1910 homes were generally constructed with large front porches that open onto small backyards; many homes also possessed smaller outbuildings such as barns or sheds jutting out prominently above street level; typical 19th century household items such as pots and pans hung on pegboard or nailed directly to walls inside dwellings; several early 20th century buildings still stand intact within their respective communities even though they may not have been used during certain years due mainly to demolition/repair projects associated with later industrial growth rates adjacent to those earliest settlements! By 1920, all but one family living in Texarkana hadigrated away - replaced by cowboys working cattle drives through Hudspeth County during summer months who supplemented their income with milk production operations conducted between Decatur Barracks south of town (near present day Midway Air Force Base) and points north across Slaughter Gulch north of town during winter months yielding approximately 6 bushels peracre raised plus 1/2 bushel produced daily yielded good return on investment averaging 50 cents / bushel dried up producing no economic value whatsoever!!! These late 1800s Cowboy Culture cowboy towns across America eventually gave way around 1930 when more efficient transportation methods became available primarily along Interstate 15 traveling farther away from big cities center!! In other words really anyplace where people could buy goods & services !! All those old fashioned values dying hard... kinda like our country itself!!!!!
