It is the most populous city in the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area and the fourth-largest city in Texas overall. Texarkana's location on the Arkansas River makes it one of the most easily accessible cities in Texas for those living outside of Dallas or Mesquite. The first settlers to Texarkana were Texans who had migrated from what is now southern Mexico to rancho land near present-day Wichita Falls, Texas, early in 1907. They named their new community after David Hogg, an old friend and leader of cattle drive fame who had come overland from Kansas with his family some years earlier. The town began as a two-timing blacksmith shop and hardware store situated on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River. By 1910, when its population reached 350 people, Texarkana had developed into a small but rapidly growing town located along both banks of the river about 12 miles (19 km) north of Wichita Falls on State Highway 4S/Upper Arlington Road. During World War I, Texarkana became home to military personnel stationed at Forbes Air Force Base; during World War II it served as Headquarters for IX Bomber Command which flew strategic bombing missions against Japan from nearby Elmendorf Air Force Base; and during Operation Overlord (the invasion of Normandy), Battle Squadron 511th Bombardment Wing operated out of Texarkana airfield until it was destroyed by Allied forces on July 6, 1944. In 1960, when Interstate 35 connected Houston and Dallas through Fort Worth–Arlington County, Texarkana became one of four cities within that newly formed Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
