Texarkana is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in East Texas, about 100 miles (160 km) northeast of Dallas and about 125 miles (210 km) southwest of Houston. As of the 2010 census, the population was 89,644. The name Texarkana comes from the Choctaw word "terkara" meaning "a place to hunt." The first European settler in what is now Texarkana was J.D. Coleman who built a log cabin on the banks of Little Red River in 1836. He named his land Coleman ranch after himself and his father-in-law, John Fenton Coleman Sr.. In 1839, James Waddell established a ranch east of Texarkana on what he called “Wesley” Ranch extending into present day Marshall County near present day Wichita Falls. Waddell sold his holdings to John Wesley Hardin in 1845 for $7000 dollars then bought backwright Jim Balch’s interest for $10 thousand dollars also conveying allhardine land south from Wichita Falls to Arkadelphia thence down Indian Creek to Arkadelphia thence upArkansas River to San Augustine Coombsville Bluff where he had been born on December 6th 1840….. In 1865, Hernando De Soto discovered Comanche Springs just outside Texarkana and decided to establish a trading post there with General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as part of his plans for capturing Mexico City overland from Mexico along the Llano Estacado route going through New Mexico andArizona Territory before reaching Mexican soil at Chihuahua….de Soto left two American soldiers under Colonel Mattie Bryant garrisoning Comanche Springs during this time as scouts…..Mexican forces soon occupied Comanche Springs but not until February 14th 1865 when they surprised American soldiers under Major George Armstrong Custer surrendering at Mission Viejo near Tucson Arizona when they were looting supplies being transported by wagon train enroute from Chihuahua back to Fort Drum….the Americans were taken prisoner and held at Mission Viejo until exchanged October 15th 1865………completed by Captain Jesse Pickens USN on January 8th 1866……..the mission was abandoned due to lack of food and water 9 days later……………the town site was surveyed by Wilkinson & Worth Surveyors on March 2nd 1867 just south of today’s courthouse square area……….Texarkana began as Bad Axe or Black Axe Station which served as headquarters for Early County Cowboys band led by Marshal Sam Houston…………Cowboys fighting with Mexican Army against Pancho Villa during Border War stopped at Bad AxeStation…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………Oklahoma Territory was organized February 24th 1861 when Congress approved proclamations calling for an immediate assessment survey within that territory including what is nowTexarkana
