Texarkana, Texas (June 18, 1907 - May 8, 2003) was an American town located in the eastern part of the Texas Panhandle. The population was 105,848 at the 2000 census. It is a small city with a small-town feel and many of its residents are descendants of those who founded Texarkana. The town has been home to many famous people including singer Willie Dixon, football player Vince Lombardi, and actor/director Clint Eastwood. The first settlers in Texarkana were white men from Arkansas who arrived in what is now Texarkana on July 3, 1881. They named their new town for General Sam Houston because he had been governor of that state at the time. On November 12 of that year, nine families from Arkansas set out for Texas on horseback to seek new land which they thought would be more hospitable than what they had available in Arkansas. They arrived at Fort Worth on December 9 and settled near present day Schertz Park where they erected a log cabin known as "Old Fort". Texas Rangers discovered the Rangers' outpost early one morning in 1882 while patrolling the area looking for Indian smugglers but no one was injured during this incident. In October 1882 Major John Sibley became commanding officer of District 2 headquartered in Wichita Falls when Lieutenant Colonel James Bowie took command of District 3 headquartered at Fort Worth due to illness within that unit. On February 6, 1886 two articles appeared in "The Dallas Morning News" reporting about plans by General Edwin Ewell Moorehead to establish a military post within 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Wichita Falls called White Sands Army Campennome which would be used for hunting buffalo and other game animals along with training troops for service against Mexico as part of United States Army Department OF Mexico War efforts under General John Denton Johnston instead of Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's forces besieging Wichita Falls garrisoned inside Mission San Gabriel Arcangela east side active housing development completed between 1888 & 1893 lots sold off before camp opened1886White Sands Post Headquarters South Main Street Depot Military Cemetery
