In 2013, TXARKANA became one of only two cities in Texas with an independent City Council form of government – following annexation by Wichita Falls in 2012). At its peak in 2016 there were over 10,000 residents living within its boundaries while downtown Texarkana accommodates 617 businesses employing more than 1450 workers generating $5 billion annually retail sales within its limits . In 2018 TXARKANA celebrated 50 years since it began as a small town giving credit to "the hard work ethic" of its citizens who have made it an important cultural center for southeastern Texans

It was renamed Texarkana in 1907 after the pronunciation of "texar" which means "a very long way." The first store in the town opened in 1881 by James Waddell and his brother-in-law Reuben Garland. The store was known as the Annexe until it burned down in 1903. A new store opened called the First National Store in 1904 and continued to be operated by Waddell and Garland until 1907 when it merged with the Second National Bank of Commerce to become First National Bank of Texarkana. This bank served as head office for Texarkana from 1905 until its merger into US Bancorp in 1912. In 1911, an oil well was drilled near Texarkana and production began immediately. The town grew rapidly due to this development and soon had several businesses including a hotel, two schools, a grocery store, a cinemaplex (the first movie theater west of Memphis), barns and corrals for cattle, mineshafts (which produced coal), physician's offices, railroad tracks leading into Bowie County from cotton fields on the east side of town,and water towers providing irrigation for surrounding land Area residents were also able to build homes around this time because there were few available elsewhere within Cotton County during this time period Theaters such as Ridgemont Studio Showcase started opening up throughout East Texas during these years generating both economic opportunities for area residents as well tourist dollars that brought people back into town In 1927 local radio station KWXX began operations with transmitter facilities located just north of town .Texarkana would continue to grow even larger through World War II with industry becoming more diversified such that now many small businesses are still open today like homebuilders/machinery dealerships along IH 35 Businesses have sprung up all over Facebook about different aspects of early 20th century TX
