In 1836, John Hogg founded the town of Texarkana with the intention of bringing civilization to the area. Polk was stationed at Fort Worth and decided to move his headquarters there. On July 12th, 1840, Edwin Vann Woodward was appointed sheriff of Brazoria County after serving as justice of peace for three years previous. On October 25th, 1840, he was elected sheriff by popular vote and took office on November 1st.
