Texarkana is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,790 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Texarkana is located in east-central McLennan County on the Arkansas River and bordered by Uvalde to the south and west and Nacogdoches to the north. The first European settlers in what would become McLennan County were two families who immigrated from Spain in 1827. They named their new community "Texarkana" after a place they had seen in their travels. The first post office was established in 1836, but it was not until 1840 that a store opened there and goods began being transported overland from Baylor University (then known as Sam Houston State University) on the San Jacinto Trail. In 1851, an irrigation canal was completed connecting Clear Fork with Buffalo Bayou; this helped irrigate much of northeast Texas during the early years of statehood. In 1865, General John Jumper surrendered at Appomattox Court House after helping lead Confederate forces to victory over Union troops at Cowpens Mountain. He went into hiding for several months before being found and surrendered at Fayetteville, Arkansas; he died shortly thereafter from his injuries. In honor of General Jumper's legacy, Texarkana had a Confederate Veteran Monument built in 1924 by local citizens including Waco attorney James Hargrave Yoakam Jr.. In 1907, Texarkana suffered its worst natural disaster when a severe drought caused extensive crop damage across most of neighboring Uvalde County. This led to increased trade between Texarkana and Nacogdoches because no other market existed for goods produced within reach of both towns

With this new land came new opportunities for trade with Indians, entrepreneurs who developed businesses such as cattle drives and oil exploration near present day Texarkana Boulevard/Highway 377. In 1881, Texarkana became the capital of Texas after being designated as the site by Governor Seawright based on recommendations from President James Kiefer Richardson; Richardson wanted to ensure that new state capitals would be located where important rivers met so that fellow Texans could better understand their surroundings. The capital changed hands several times before becoming permanent at its current location in 1886 when Judge Augustus Biddle Webb erected a log courthouse on what is now Main Street/Boulevard 377 Temple Avenue (). The townsquare began construction soon thereafter with cornerstone placement taking place on December 10th, 1887 (). The growth ofTexarkana coincided with progress being made along the Chisholm Trail southward from Austin through Kansas City into Oklahoma Territory which had been annexed by Mexico following its war with US forces under General Santa Anna in 1862 (). Upon annexation by Texas in 1901 following passage of an act by both houses of Congress titled “An Act To Annex Texas” (), most Native American residents moved out or were forcibly relocated westward into Apache territory near modern Phoenix AZ while some also choseto move back eastward within New Mexico Territory () creating an increasingly complex cultural mosaic across two separate nations (). Due to limited resources available throughout much of Central America during this time period due primarily to changes in soil composition caused by overgrazing during previous centuries (), many farmers turned their attention away from crop production towards cattle ranching leading to increased competition for water supplies which led eventually to open warfare between traditional societies over dwindling resources (.milk rivers supporting crop Production vs Cowboys using them For Water), leading eventually to forced assimilation or displacement among various groups () resulting ultimatelyin mass migration across international borders including numerous Texans who found themselves livingamongst Native Americans once again
